Rushmoor in Bloom

Last year the children in the Early Years created a 'Bug Olympics' for the Rushmoor in Bloom Competition.  They were delighted to receive 3rd prize which was a selection of plants for the Early Years playground.  Last Tuesday Owen Durrett and Bob Anderson from Rushmoor Rotary Club came to help Gardening Club plant our new plants.

Cool Castle Creations!

Year 2 have started 2013 in a very royal way! Our topic this half term is 'In a Land of Magic' and we have jumped straight in, having a week all about castles and who lives in them!


In Maths, we have been exploring shape. We thought about which 3D shapes would be used to create a castle. We have also decorated castles with repeating shape patterns.



On Thursday we all went outside to enjoy making our very own castle from cardboard boxes. We made sure that the castle had arrow slits, battlements and towers. How do you think we did?

We also created our own family crests to display around our castle.








To finish our day we thought more about who lived in castles. We learnt about kings and queens from History, such as Henry VIII and William the Conqueror.


On Friday we all made a big effort and came in dressed up as characters that could be in a fairytale castle. We worked in groups to plan a story and then acted it out, ensuring that everyone lived happily ever after!

We have had a wonderful week as you can see! Why not try making a castle of your own at home?

Fire! Fire! Fire!

Year 1 had lots of fun hopping on board the fire engine which came to our school as part of our topic Fire! Fire! Fire!

The fire fighters talked to us about keeping safe at home. We learnt the ryhme   

'Get out. Stay Out. Call 999'

 to help us remember what to do if there is a fire.

 

 

 We practised using the hose which was great fun. Luckily we had a good aim and all stayed dry!

Year 2 so far

Can you believe it's December already?  It seems like only yesterday you were starting out as Year 2 children in Chestnut, Birch and Hazel and now you've been in Year 2 for a whole term.  So much has happened - can you remember everything you've learnt?

Talan Skeels-Piggins spoke to us about his accident and what he had done to overcome his barriers and be able to take part in sport again.  This led to our Dream Books, which we are now filling with lots of interesting work.  We are now thinking about our plans for the future and what we would like to be when we grow up.
 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Geography Day and Book Day

 

 

Year 2 visited France, India and Italy finding out about the different customs of these countries as well as trying delicious croissants, poppadoms and pizza. We also came into school dressed as our favourite character from a book which is why Mog is serving pizza!
 

Book Week 

 

We read the "Flat Stanley" books and found out how he became flat in the first place and the exciting adventures he had afterwards.  Can you imagine being put in an envelope and posted when you want to visit a different place?   Did you take your Flat Stanley anywhere exciting after he arrived through the post?

Wow!  What a fantastic time we all had.  First there was the trip to the planetarium - it was out of this world!  Lying back in those big, comfy seats watching the earth, sun and moon was just amazing.  And then when the roof "opened" and we saw the night sky - it was breath taking.

That curious sheep, Calvin, he was right to stay awake because something exciting did happen - the baby Jesus was born.  Our Christmas play was brilliant and we had so much fun singing and dancing.  
 

 

Colours of the World

This half term our topic has been ‘Colours of the World’. Our class bears have invited their friend Elmer the Patchwork elephant to help us learn about colour.

 

 

Each week we have learnt about a different colour and what happens when we mix colours. We have experimented to mix colours and make different tones.

We had lots of fun going on a colour walk to explore different colours in the natural environment.

 

 

 

 

 

We have also been learning about why colour and light are important parts of celebrations all over the world.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Knock Knock Who's There?

In Year 1 this half term we have enjoyed finding out about different houses and homes. This week we had lots of fun making homes out of different materials. 

We used paper, cardboard, tin foil, leaves, plastic, material and we also put up 2 tents. We thought about which of these homes would keep us warm, dry and safe. 

In our art lessons we worked carefully to make houses from clay.  We used different tools to make the patterns of our bricks and roof tiles.  Then we painted and varnished them.

Welcome to Early Years!

 

We have been settling well into our new classes in Early Years. There have been lots of exciting activities for us to do, both inside and out, as we have had fun learning through play.

This half term our topic is 'Good to be Me'. Each week our class bear comes to visit us and helps us to find out new things. So far we have painted self-portraits, drawn pictures of our families, talked about the things we are good at, learnt about our bodies and explored using our senses.

 

We have all talked about how to be happy, safe and good at school and made a class charter to help us remember.

Over the next couple of weeks we will be looking at how we can stay healthy, growing up and celebrating bear’s birthday! He’s very excited because he’s going to be five!
