Year 1 Autumn Term

Autumn Term in Year 1

We have had a very busy first term in Year One.  We particularly enjoyed our visit from Bird World last week.  As part of our topic this term, we have been reading stories about owls, including "WOW!" said the Owl.  So we were particularly excited to see and learn more about Mozart, the Bird World owl.

Also, we learnt more about different groups of animals including birds, mammals and reptiles and some of us were very brave and stroked the snake!  A highlight of the visit was when the Macaw flew over our heads.

At the beginning of the year we found out information about dinosaurs.  We looked at fossils and during our work on Mary Anning, we made our own fossils out of clay.  Also, we had fun using drama to act out 'The dinosaurs are having a party' when we were paid a visit from The Big Foot Theatre Company.  We also made our own cave paintings using chalks.

Great Year 6 Bake Off

What a fantastic day for Children in Need! First of all I would like to say another big thank you to all of the children (and I am sure parents) who spent a great deal of time baking their show stoppers and cakes for the bake sale. Another big thank you if you brought in some cakes this morning. We managed to raise over £186 just from the bake sale! The finalists for the show stoppers were:

  • Faith Hill and Chloe Blake in 6J
  • Jonathan Coleville in 6P
  • Brooke Hockerday in 6C

The whole school put money in each classes boxes and Jonathan ended up winning! Overall (as a year group) we raised over £250. A big thank you to all parents who gave children money or helped buy/bake cakes. This is a fantastic total and will go towards an amazing charity.

Below are some pictures of everything year 6 have got up to today!

Settling into life in year 2!

We have been in year 2 for an entire half term already - time flies when you're having fun!

We have been lucky enough to have lots of different things going on.

The whole school got to do lots of drama with Charlie from the Big Foot Theatre Company which was lots of fun. We did drama activities about going through a magic door then we wrote our own stories.

Year 2 got to go on a trip to Windsor Castle - the Queen wasn't there but we were told that Prince Philip was! Some of the children were lucky enough to see the changing of the guards too which was very exciting.

Year 6 came down as part of book week and they read us the poems they had written based on Roald Dahl's Revolting Rhymes. We had a great time listening to them and we even read them some of our work.

Now we are back for the last half of the Autumn Term and we are already practising for our Christmas Production.

LET'S EXPLORE

Over the last term Year One have been outside exploring.
To begin we had an 'Explorer Day' in our school grounds. We tested different materials and built different structures to find out which would make the best shelter.
We decided our shelters should be waterproof and strong.
When we tested them with water we found out that the plastic and the parachute materials were best at keeping us dry.

Then we went on a minibeast hunt to find out which creatures lived in our school grounds.  We searched in the wildlife area, under the trees and on the playground.  We found animals hiding under logs and stones and resting on leaves.

This week we went on a visit to Hillier Gardens.  We found out more about how plants grow and we saw lots of different plants.  We were fantastic at finding things that didn't belong on the trees during our treasure hunt including a dinosaur and a hairbrush!

The Queen's Birthday

Weighing carefully.

The children in year 2 were set the challenge of following a recipe to make some delicious cupcakes for the Queen's birthday tea party.

Carefully cracking the eggs!

They had to weigh out the ingredients carefully, crack the eggs themselves & make sure the ingredients were mixed thoroughly.
Teamwork to mix the cake mixture.

Once the cupcakes were baked the children had to draw some designs for decorating them and then got to use lots of different toppings to decorate their own cupcake. Finally, they were allowed to take them home to eat...luckily there were some left over for the teachers to taste!

Our beautifully decorated cakes - fit for the Queen!

Year R go exploring at Bocketts Farm

In May Year R went on an adventure to Bocketts Farm. We have been learning all about the Farm and the different animals, so it was very exciting to see a real working farm.
We had the opportunity to go on a very bumpy tractor ride around the farm, we had to hold on very tight as we looked out for lots of different animals.

We also saw a goat being milked and met lots of animals and their young in the big barn.

We had to be very quiet and gentle when meeting some small animals.

For many of us the most exciting part of the day was the pig race! We had lots of fun cheering as loud as we could for our pigs, at the finish orange pig won!

We had loads of fun at the farm!

Pirate Day!

Everyone in year 2 had a fantastic time becoming pirates for the day to round up our 'Splish Splash Splosh' topic.

We went on an exciting treasure hunt around the school grounds, made our own treasure maps for others to follow and searched for missing items in a scavenger hunt.

At the end of the day we received our pirate passports.
