Our New Outdoor Area!

Early Years have been very excited to use our brand new outdoor area! We enjoyed watching the builders working hard and couldn't wait to get up the hill to explore. It has been very popular and has given us somewhere nice to sit and eat our snack as well. In the lovely hot weather, it has also given us somewhere nice and shady to sit or play.

Chicks

We are very excited that all of our chicks have successfully hatched. The final one came out of the incubator today to join her friends. They are all pecking at the food and drinking their water. Have a look underneath the pictures to see some of the observations the children have made about our feathery visitors...

Building Work!

As lots of our parents will have seen, the builders have been busy working on part of our outdoor area. We are very excited to see the progress - they have even been out working in the pouring rain! It has been exciting to see the different machines moving about. We look forward to it being finished so we can have even more space to play outside.

Down on the Farm

We can't believe it but we are in our last half term of Early Years! This year has flown by so far and the children have grown up so much and are almost ready to move to year 1.

This half term we are learning about out topic 'Down on the Farm'. We are looking forward to our first school trip next week to Bocketts Farm. To get ready we will be learning about things that are grown on farms, the types of animals you might find on a farm and about how animals change from being babies to adults.

Our new role-play areas are farm shops so we can practise writing shopping lists and using real coins to pay for our shopping.

New Role Play Areas!

Written with help by children in Maple Class - typed by Mrs Woodward.

The new role play is a farm shop.  We cut paper for the shop. I cut up a piece of paper with cheese on the paper.

We need to get some things to sell like eggs and milk. We need a shopkeeper. We need to get a till for the money. We need some cards for the people to have for a receipt.

Our caterpillars are growing!

Our caterpillars are changing!

Most of them have hung in their chrysalises already - we still have one or two that are making the change and sadly a couple that didn't make it but we spoke about how this happens in nature and how perhaps they wouldn't have been strong enough to turn into butterflies.

The children have been doing lots of writing talking all about the changes they can see happening and noticing the differences between some of the chrysalises. They have been slower than other years to change this far so we are still crossing our fingers that they will be ready to release before the half term - if not, Miss Wiseman has helpfully offered to take some home to film for us.

Creepy Crawlies

This half term, year R will be learning all about our new topic...Creepy Crawlies!

Before we broke up for the Easter break, the children spent some time at the art table creating their own minibeasts for our classroom displays - we gave them pictures of the minibeasts and they chose the materials they wanted to use to create their own.

As part of this topic, we have had a very special delivery... we have had caterpillars delivered to each class! We will be looking after our caterpillars and watching them as they make their change into being butterflies. We have already learnt about the life-cycle of a butterfly and can't wait to see ours grow up!

Here are two of our caterpillars - Eric and Albie. We will keep you updated on the progress of our new friends!

Fairy Tale Ball

To celebrate how hard we have all worked this half term, we had our very own fairy tale ball! We got to dress up as different characters from stories we know and show off our awesome moves on the dance floor!

We even got to use the green screen (which the junior site helpfully lent us) with the iPad to take photos as if we were in a story setting and not in our hall. We hope you like looking at the photographs as much as we did.

Spring Term - Year 4

The past few weeks have been very busy in Year 4!

We visited Farnham Museum and discovered even more interesting facts about Anglo-Saxon life. We learnt about the different types of food that Anglo-Saxons ate, and we all tried some bread that was made using a real Anglo-Saxon recipe!

We also got the chance to be archaeologists, and we worked as a group to search through a sand pit to find ancient Anglo-Saxon artefacts. It was such a fun trip that we all really enjoyed – some of us even got to dress up in Anglo-Saxon clothing!

We are currently working really hard to make Viking Longboats, and are looking forward to showing you them!

Fruit & Veg Shop

Welcome to our new fruit and veg shop! The children have loved taking it in turns to be the shopkeepers and the customers. We have got some real fruit and vegetables to use which has encouraged lots of talk about healthy eating choices. This week we have been looking at different coins and talking about their value so we have also enjoyed having real money in our tills to use.

Year 2 Spring Term

This term started with a very exciting visit from Captain Rockycliffe! We learnt all about pirates, real ones and fictional ones. We had great fun acting out the story of the Pirate Cruncher and had some amazing ideas about the sorts of adventures pirates have.

We also got to design and make our very own pirate ship. Then we tested it to see if it was waterproof or not!

We then moved on to our topic "Be the Best",  where we have been thinking about superheroes.
We have enjoyed pretending to be a superhero  and coming up with different powers we would love to have.

Spring Term in Year 1

OUT OF THIS WORLD

At the beginning of the Spring Term, we enjoyed finding out about SPACE!
We enjoyed an exciting visit to the Science Centre in Winchester where we found out more about the planets in the planetarium and raced our own rockets!

One morning, when we came into class we found a spaceship had crash landed into our kitchen garden. We wrote information to help others know how to look after one of the aliens.

In our art lessons we used chalks to create our own fantastic space pictures.

A TOY STORY

This half term, we have been learning about toys.  We have talked about our own favourite toys and researched which toys are popular in Year R and in Year 2.

We loved designing and making our own brilliant pop-up toys.

Traditional Tales

This half term we are learning lots of traditional tales and fairy stories. We have been enjoying reading different versions of our stories. The children have been choosing to read these stories to each other in their learning time.

So far we have read Jack and the Beanstalk, the Gingerbread Man and this week we are reading Little Red Riding Hood. We have been doing lots of activities related to the different stories and characters. This morning, some children made 'cone characters' completely independently. We have become experts and using our scissors to cut carefully and complete challenges like this without giving up!

Last week, World Book Day was perfectly timed to fit in with our learning. Lots of the children came dressed as characters from stories we have read this year. We all wrote about which characters we dressed as and talked about why we dressed as them. Lots of the children challenged themselves to writing their own stories or writing about their character. We were very impressed with Leo's writing about his character, the Gruffalo. We think his drawing is just fabulous! "The Gruffalo is massive."

The children always have access to using the class interactive whiteboard and they have been practising their phonics in their independent learning time and writing words and sentences too.

Keep tuned for more photos of our work and for our upcoming fairy-tale ball!

Half way there!

Can you believe we have already completed half a year at infant school? Last half term we had our topic 'Under The Sea' and we worked as a team to create a giant display using lots of things the children had made.

The children used their colour mixing scales to create the scales for our mermaid and merman tails. We drew around different children to make the bodies & groups of children painted the bodies, faces and hair. The children drew, painted and coloured different fish for our display to make it nice and colourful. They created seaweed with more colour mixing and by cutting spirals of paper. We are very proud of our work and we hope you enjoy seeing it when you come and visit Early Years.

We are about to start our new topic about fairy tales called 'Once Upon A Time...'. We wonder if you can guess what book we will be reading first by looking at this giant beanstalk in one of our role-play areas?

Later in the week we will be making castles from 'junk modelling'. But first we need to make a design for our castle so we know what we will be building. We have looked at some other castles, both real and pretend, to give us some ideas for our designs. We can't wait to get busy making the final products!

We are enjoying the beautiful, dry weather (let's hope it continues as this time last year we were only a week away from the "Beast From The East"!) and having lots of fun outside. In the final summer term we have sports day to look forward to so it's always good to start practising using the bounce-hoppers ready so we are experts by the time we race! We love taking the chalks outside to mark make - using the playground means our drawings can be as big as we want!

As the half term goes on we will be reading lots of different fairy tales at school but remember you can read lots of different ones at home or write your own stories too! 😁
