Year 1 Stargazing

Good afternoon Year 1,

Just an update from Miss Curme, this week I have decided to become a Stargazer and I thought you might want to hear a little bit about it and maybe even join in if you get the chance.
I have been looking at different events that are happening in the sky at night at the moment and have found out some amazing things.

SpaceX have sent lots of satellites into space and you may be lucky enough to see the ‘Starlink’ formation in the sky from your gardens all this week. They travel across the sky between 9pm and 10pm (which is really late) so this may be too late for you to stay up. However, you can find pictures of this on the internet and video clips on Youtube if you can’t see this for yourselves.

On Tuesday night, there was also a meteor shower happening, it was very late at night but I wonder if there are some meteor shower clips that you could find on the internet with your grown up.
I have found some amazing stargazing things to do on the cbeebies website. You could find out what it is like to be an astronaut or use stargazing maps to spot different groups of stars.

There are quizzes and games to play as well! https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/shows/stargazing

There are some clips on BBC teach – Little stargazing. https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/class-clips-video/little-stargazing/zdys92p

Here is some more information about the night sky and star constellations. https://stfc.ukri.org/files/educational-publications/hands-on-universe-ks1/

Can you find your own ‘star pictures’ in the sky?

Can you draw some star pictures with pencils, pens, paints or even chalks?

Could you take some photographs of the moon?

You could make your very own ‘moon diary’ and notice how the way we see the moon changes over the month.

I would love to hear what you have found out when you come back to school!
